Park to be cut down in Donetsk for Euro-2012 hotel

Regardless of numerous protests from Donetsk residents, its Pobeda Park suffers death sentence. Only after third attempt Donetsk municipal council adopted resolution to pass on part of Pobeda Park at the bank of Kalmius river to a private firm to build a hotel.

At the 27th session of 5th convocation mayor of Donetsk and the deputies

sentenced greenery to cutting down for 5-star hotel basement. They’ve adopted decision to pass part of the territory to the east of Youth Palace on to “Floria” JSC for dubious construction from the third try (at previous two sessions voluntary activists succeeded to remove the issue from the agenda).

Local officials couldn’t be prevented from making the decision even by public hearings on Pobeda Park preservation issue, scheduled for this day. Announcement of the hearings was located at the site of Donetsk mayor Alexander Lukyanchenko. It was supposed during the hearings the city community would speak of reasonability to destroy green nook for the profit of personal interests of commercial firms, aiming to easily grow rich at the forthcoming Europe Football Championship, several matches of which would be held in the city.

However Donetsk authorities hadn’t considered it necessary to take into account opinion of Donetsk residents, so the resolution has been adopted before public hearings started.
